Over the weekend, Hillsborough County reported a massive wastewater spill at the Falkenburg Road Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brandon, Florida. Officials confirmed that more than 32 million gallons of wastewater overflowed after the plant’s filtration system was clogged, potentially caused by an industrial chemical dumped into the system. The spill, equivalent to roughly 48 Olympic-sized swimming pools, temporarily shut down the facility before operations were restored. County leaders are investigating the source of the clog and considering stronger safeguards to prevent future failures.
