Clean-up efforts ensue after the rupture of an Iowa pipeline, located in Worth County. The 12-inch pipeline owned by Magellan Midstream Partners L.P. was transporting diesel fuel when the system suddenly released almost 140,000 gallons of diesel fuel mix.

The release of the diesel fuel accumulated in a nearby farm field. An environmental specialist, David Miller, stated the pipeline company hopes to clean up the pooled fuel in the coming days. Once the field is fuel free, the contaminated soil must be exhumed.

A country roadway near the affected area has been temporarily closed due to the severity of the incident. The fuel was contained in time before the contamination of surface waterways. Pipeline repairs are expected to begin shortly, but officials are not sure when operations will fully resume. Fortunately, there were no injuries or evacuations accompanying with the leak.

The spill comes amongst a time of heated debates over pipeline safety concerns in the United States. The fear of pipeline explosions, environmental damage, and water contamination have triggered numerous protests and retaliations across the nation. The question remains, how safe are American’s with 2.5 million miles of pipelines streaming across the country?
