Residents protesting the Nexus natural gas pipeline are determined to not go down without a fight.  More than 60 residents filed suit asking the court to prevent FERC from issuing the certificate and allowing construction of the pipeline to begin.

Recently, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted a "certificate of public convenience and necessity" for the 255-mile long pipeline project paving the way for the proposed pipeline to carry natural gas from Eastern Ohio, across Ohio and into Michigan, where it will connect with an existing pipeline to transport natural gas into Canada.

Residents in the Ohio counties of Medina, Lorain, and Summit have objected to the $2.1 billion project for years.  The pipeline is projected to run through heavily populated communities near homes, businesses, and schools. Many fear the Nexus natural gas pipeline will contaminate the soil, water, and air.

Dozens of private landowners in Ohio, whose properties are in the path of the pipeline have refused to sign easements to allow construction to begin. To acquire the necessary easements, Nexus may use the power of eminent domain to force property owners to give up their land.  A local grassroots opposition organization has encouraged landowners to hire an eminent domain lawyer to ensure their rights are protected and they are justly compensated for the loss of their property.

FERC’s approval authorizes Nexus to begin construction and allow an in-service date in 2018. However, residents believe Nexus must cross more obstacles before construction can commence. Landowners stated that Nexus must obtain a water quality permit from the Ohio EPA and another from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
