Wastewater Treatment Facility Worries Residents

Sewage smell permeates private residences in the South Haven subdivision of Denham Springs. A wastewater treatment facility is tucked behind homes, but that doesn’t stop the foul odors from dispersing throughout the entire neighborhood.

The wastewater treatment facility is one of 112 facilities owned and operated by Mo-Dad Utilities. A fence surrounds the Mo-Dad facility to protect large pools of water inside. Homeowners declare that the facility is a safety issue. The fence contains multiple holes that are wide enough for animals or small children to fit through. Residents fear that the large water tanks have insecure lids. Plywood covers the 20 feet deep rectangular holes that house pools of water at the bottom.

Water empties from a discharge pipe into a creek, carrying the wafting sewage odor. Homeowners are concerned the creek water is carrying debris and other toxins due to the discharge pipe. Residents also worry about the health hazards associated with living near a waste water treatment facility.
