Every day pipelines threaten to entrench on the environment and affect way of life for many across the nation. The Mountain Valley Pipeline, projected to cut across the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, is no different.

The proposed natural gas pipeline will stretch approximately 300 miles from northwest West Virginia to southern Virginia, while involving the clearing of a formerly protected corridor of the Jefferson National Forest. In addition to spanning across 3.4 miles of the Jefferson National Forest, the project will cut through the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Environmental groups say picturesque viewpoints along the Appalachian Trail will be ruined by the construction of the pipeline.

Public safety concerns have increased at an alarming rate. Residents, businesses, and community organizations located in proximity to the pipeline will find themselves in the “blast zone”—a high consequence area around the pipeline with an approximately 1,115 feet-radius—where an explosion can lead to hazardous outcomes and have a significant impact on people and property. The blast zone encompasses historical buildings, as well as residential homes. Many Virginians have also conveyed fears of groundwater contamination due to the permeable nature of some of the state’s terrain where the pipeline is arranged to go.

At this time, the proposal for the Mountain Valley Pipeline anticipates a 2017 mid-year construction start date. Follow the link below for more information on the story. See in detail how environmental groups and residents of Virginia are voicing their disapproval.
